Wether you are new to journaling or an experienced writer this is an activity that can help you organize your thoughts and feelings right now.  If you are like me, and have several new responsibilities that have found their way to your plate, journaling can help you sort everything out.  If you notice that you are feeling a little bit of overwhelm in this season download our free resource Overcoming Overwhelm. In this series, I share with you the same tools that were given to me years ago when overcoming the overwhelm that came alongside my Post Traumatic Stress Disorder diagnoses.  These tools have given me back my life, and I want you to be able to become free from overwhelm too!  Double Bonus: By downloading this series you will automatically be in the running to win one of the planners or journals that Brandie Price Image is giving away!!

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  1. Choose a Journal.  You can purchase a special journal online at many different retailers, or use a notebook you might have laying around.  Decide if you would prefer a Guided Journal or a Blank Journal. Each style offers separate benefits.  A guided journal offers prompts to help you think about specific topics that you can write about.  These are usually themed around an area that you have interest.  Some have scripture, while others are subject based.  A blank journal can be either completely blank, have lines, or a dot grid pattern but leaves plenty of space for you to tailor your journaling needs.   Also consider the size of the journal.  would you like it to fit in your bag?  Do you write a little, or a lot?  This will help you choose the size that you need.  Pick What works best for you.
  2. Start With Gratitude.  Choose a time of day that you would like to add to your journal each day.  Keep in mind that what you write will serve as a time capsule of this time.  Don't let that inhibit what you are writing, let it fuel what you are writing.  This will help you get your emotions and feelings all out on paper which will help you process and organize your thoughts.  You will be able to look back on this time and remember so many wonderful moments in time and points of gratitude.
  3. Write about your Mood and Health.  This is a great time to really get a baseline for each of these areas.  Track how you are feeling when you start to journal and see if journaling helps your overall mood.  Tracking your health goals can really add in an additional layer of accountability, as well as give you a place to write out how you feel after eating particular foods, or how your workouts make you feel.
  4. Write about all of your Dream Trips that you would like to take, once we are able to start traveling again. You can also start planning different outings that you would like to take your children on.  This will help you dream about the future, which can be very healthy!

Personally, I set aside time each day to journal.  It has been a great way to relieve stress and help me focus on what is most important in this season of our life.  Here are the 2 journals that I have been keeping daily for over a year.  The Start Today Journal and the Write The Word Journal.  Both of these guided journals help me cultivate gratitude and direction for my life in different ways.   The Start Today Journal begins with 5 points of gratitude, and ends with 10 dreams written in present tense, as though you have already achieved them.  This has helped me check several dreams off of my list over the course of the past year.  The Write The Word Journal provides a point of gratitude, a daily scripture, plenty of room to write down what is on your heart, and then a word for the day.  Keeping this practice up, has helped me to keep overwhelm at bay.  Below are some signs that you may be affected by overwhelm.
