Letters to my Daughter - Beauty

Feb 20, 2020

To My Daughter,

I want to show you the confidence I have in my own beauty, in the hopes that you will be able to identify the beauty in yourself.

I want you to see that I am no longer hesitant to look in the mirror.  At some point I want to be vulnerable enough to share the trials that I have been through for me to see how truly beautiful that I am today.  I want you to know this process, because at some point you may need to overcome the same demons.  At some point, you may need to encourage a friend that believes that she has too many freckles to be beautiful, or too many scars to be worthy.

I want you to see the clients that I work with both on television, and meet them in person. I want you to know the difference between the two. I want you to know that these are the same people, both in real life, and on camera.  I want you to see that they have value with or without makeup, with or without pretty clothes. I want you to see that their message is important both on and off camera. I want you to see these things, because I want you to know that those who are off camera are just as important as those who are on camera. I want you to know your beauty, regardless of the career path that you choose. I want you to know your beauty and not allow others to dictate the value of your beauty.

I want you to know the difference between real, raw, untamable beauty and manufactured beauty.

I want you to have compassion for your friend that told you that your back to school hair cut was boyish because you wanted to get a bob hairstyle in the fall.  I know that this is big, and heavy and a lot to process for you right now. I want you to be compassionate for that little girl, because it is hard telling what else she might be hearing at home about what a girl is supposed to be like. You may be comforting that same girl in junior high when she doesn’t meet her own expectations of what she should be. I can only show you this by choosing compassion over judgement for others.

I want you to know your beauty and not be afraid of it.  I want you to know that you are worthy of the beauty that you hold, both physically and inside.  I want you to know that it is ok for you to have a heart for helping others to see the beauty that they hold as well.  We have the power within us to bring light to the beauty of others. The more that we shine that light, the more beautiful the world around us will become.

I want you to know your beauty, but not from a comparison standpoint.  I want you to truly know that you are beautiful beyond comparison.  I want to show you that I too, know that I am beautiful. I can only show you this by my confidence regardless of makeup application, and by not caring about what others might see as an imperfection. I now that if I focus on my imperfections, that will only teach you to focus on yours.

I want to show you how to see the true beauty in others.  And I know that this can come only after you see the beauty in yourself.
