Letters to my Daughter - Story

Jan 23, 2020

To My Daughter,

I want you to see that the story of my life has made an undeniable impact, because I want you to know at your core that your life will also make an undeniable impact.

I want you to see me get into the mud and dig deep into the dirt with women.  I want you to know that by digging deep into the stories of other people, we can affect positive change.  I want you to know that the fight is worth it.  I want you to know that the story will always have a happy ending. That the hero will emerge victorious, because we, and others, have dug deep into their life.

I want you to believe in the beauty of a well laid out story and the beautiful creation of that story.  The beauty of your own story.  What ever the story your life tells might be.  I want you to find joy in the fight and love in the battle.  I want to show you how to find joy in yourself and love for your own story.

I want you to see that stories sometimes have themes that keep coming up.  Whether that theme be needing to learn contentment or having to re-learn how to be a good friend.

I want you to see that the story of your life, impacts the stories of the lives of everyone you will meet.  I tell you this, not because I want you to feel pressure, but because I want you to know that you can be a shining light and a beacon of hope.  You, my dear, are a world changer.

While you are already doing this at such a young age, and I want to protect your sweet spirit for as long as I can, I know that you will grow and with that comes challenges that we haven’t embarked on yet.  I also know that many stories require pain in order to appreciate joy and love.  I do not wish this on you, instead, I am readying myself to guide you through it should the time come.

I want you to feel empowered to tell the story of your life without hesitation, shame, or ego. The only way that I can do that, is to share with you the victory of telling my own story. Baby girl, I am working on this, and I know you can see it.

I want your story to be your own story, and not my own.  It is so hard to write that in this letter, because I will always want to be a large part of your story.  Right now we are at the center of each other’s world. Your growth in independence both brings me joy, and sorrow. I know that someday, I may not be the center of your world.  You will get your license and start hanging out with your friends more, you may go to college, you will probably find a wonderful husband, and have children of your own.  One day, you won’t be sitting on my lap snuggling in the office chair while watching the sunrise.  Someday your story will be much different than mine, and I want to show you how to be confident in your own story.
